JÓZEF KOWAL

Szczekociny, 16 June 1948. Judge M. Gawdzik heard the person named below as a witness. Having been advised of the criminal liability for making false declarations and of the significance of the oath, the Judge took an oath, following which the witness testified as follows:

Name and surname Józef Kowal

Place of residence Rokitno, Włoszczowa district

The Soviet POWs’ camp in Podlipie village, Rokitno commune, was founded in August 1944. There were 350-400 POWs of Armenian nationality in the camp. The German staff consisted of about 30 people.

I didn’t witness any incidents of harassing the prisoners, however the discipline was harsh.

I do not recall cases of death among the soviet POWs, nor were any of them buried on the premises of the camp.

Around six had fled to the guerilla groups.

I am not aware what military unit served there. I do not know the surnames of the crew.

The report was read out.
