ZOFIA SZEFER

Staszów, 31 July 1947. The District Commission for the Investigation of German Crimes in the Region of the District Court in Radom, Branch Office at the Municipal Court in Staszów, in the person of judge Albin Walkiewicz, a lawyer from Staszów, heard the person named below as an unsworn witness. Having been advised of the criminal liability for making false declarations and of the wording of Article 107 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the witness testified as follows:

Name and surname Zofia Szefer, née Rayska
Age 73 years old
Parents’ names Konstanty and Konstancja
Place of residence Staszów, Wschodnia Street 7
Occupation old age pensioner
Religious affiliation Reformed Evangelical
Criminal record none

During the occupation I lived in Sielec, Oględów commune, Stopnica district. One day in 1944 – if I remember the year correctly – the German gendarmerie from Staszów drove up with two men and two women close to the Evangelic church in Sielec and executed them by shooting. Another time they brought in a man from Rytwiany (I don’t remember his surname) who was battered beyond recognition and could not walk; he was pushed with rifle butts. Yet another time they brought in two people; all of them were executed.

Right by my house, the Germans marched Jews from Staszów in the direction of Stopnica. This was accompanied by constant shooting, as all those who fainted along the way were killed: men, women and children alike. My field alone, which is no more than a kilometer long, was littered with the bodies of 14 murdered Jews. The road was covered with blood.

I knew one German by the name of Henryk Rösler, who was a permanent resident of Sielec before the War and – as it turned out later – a German spy. During the occupation he collaborated closely with the Germans. I know that he was killing Poles. I know of one specific case – he murdered Migoń from Koniemłoty – but I know that Rösler killed more people. He accompanied the Germans on many occasions, for instance he took part in the destruction of the village of Strużki and the murder of its residents. Rösler was shot dead by the partisans. I am sure of it because his funeral was held in Sielec. I don’t know any other surnames of German criminals.

I know nothing else pertinent. The report was read out.
