JÓZEF MASTALERZ

In Białaczów on this day, 18 September 1948, at 11.00 a.m., functionary H. Górczyński from the Citizens’ Militia Station in Białaczów, with the participation of reporter Jerzy Galant, heard the person named below as a witness. Having been advised of the criminal liability for making false declarations and of the wording of Article 140 of the Penal Code, the witness testified as follows:

Name and surname Józef Mastalerz
Parents’ names Antoni and Teofila
Age 38 years old
Place of birth Miedzna Drewniana
Religious affiliation Roman Catholic
Occupation farmer
Place of residence Miedzna Drewniana, Białaczów commune
Relationship to the parties brother

As regards the case of murder of my brother, Franciszek, and four other people who were murdered together with him, that is: 1) Piotr Smolarek, 2) Józef Podpłoński, 3) Stanisław Korbownik, 4) Józef Abratkiewicz. All the above named men were arrested by the Gestapo and the gendarmerie in the village of Miedzna Drewniana, Białaczów commune, Opoczno district, and immediately taken to the forest in the State Forestry District of Białaczów, where they were murdered in a bestial way: first they were beaten and then shot in the back of the head at some random spot. The Germans buried them in a pit approximately 150 centimeters deep and then leveled the hole.

Three months later we transferred the bodies of the executed to the cemetery in Białaczów. These murdered people were arrested on the basis of some list, but they were completely innocent.

During their last retreat, that is in January 1945, the Germans shot three Poles:

1) Jan Walecki, who tried to extinguish a fire in a barn which the Germans had set alight; he was killed with a bullet when standing on a ladder.

2) Jan Sikora, shot by a German when running towards a shelter.

Next, Józef Smolarek was shot in his own yard and thrown into a burning flat, where he burnt.

They also took Władysław Podsiedlik, 38 years old, to a concentration camp, where he was murdered.

This is all I know in the present case.

At this the report was concluded, read out and signed.
