In July 1942, I worked as a trainee blacksmith at Józef Śmietanka’s smithy in the village of Zamość. Around 1.00 p.m. a motor car with 6 German gendarmes from the station in Zwoleń drove up to the blacksmith’s shop. The men entered the shop and took Józef Śmietanka with them, saying that they were going to his brother, Bronisław, in Stefanów. More or less 2 hours later, I heard 4 shots, and was later informed that Józef and Bronisław Śmietanka had been killed at the time near the village of Babin. I went up to the spot and saw their bodies, lying some 10 m from the road. The corpses were buried in the exact same place. I know neither the reasons for the execution, nor the surnames of the gendarmes.
