WIESŁAW ROTT

Warsaw, 9 January 1946. Acting Investigating Judge Antoni Krytowski, delegated to the Warszawa-Miasto Branch of the Main Commission for the Investigation of German Crimes, interviewed the person named below as an unsworn witness. The witness was reminded of the oath which he had taken and he testified as follows:

Wiesław Rott (known from the case files)

I have a clear recollection of the exhumation I carried out in the grounds of the military prison at the intersection of Gęsia and Zamenhoffa Streets. The exhumation lasted three days and, as I testified before, we extracted from pit "C" 66 bodies and 11 remains of human bodies (the witness was shown a sketch drawn up by Tadeusz Kowalski. The sketch is appended to the scene examination report of 30 May 1945). Reports were drawn up during the exhumation and turned over to the PCK (Polish Red Cross). It is impossible that any mistake was made here. Having been exhumed, the bodies were buried in the same pit "C". Initially, it was intended for the bodies to be placed in pit "D" which was dug specifically for this purpose. However, when it turned out that the number of the bodies came to no more than 66 and that they were Jewish bodies to be taken care of, as I assumed, by the Jewish Community, I decided to place them in the pit "C", from which they had been extracted, and fill pit "D" with the remains of these 11 bodies and the human ashes gathered from the surrounding courtyards and drains. Some of the ashes were actually transferred to pit "D" and the whole task was thoroughly carried out, but on the order of our supervisor Dr. Jerzy Zakrzewski, I had to terminate our activities.

The report was read out.
