My wartime experience
When the front was passing, I was sitting in a shelter in the area. When the Soviets came to Wisznice in the morning, we went home. As we walked, we saw that the bridge was gone and there was a piece of wood on the river and that’s how we got to the other side. When we came to the market, the Soviets were already there. I went home to see if it had burned down. I stayed near the house for a while and then walked by the German cars that [the Germans] had left behind. I went to the market again and I found a grenade by the bell tower. I started dismantling it, and it started to hiss, so I threw it at Lesiuk’s feet [?]. The [grenade] exploded and wounded us, and we started running home, and when I ran, I just heard blood dripping. Some Soviet soldier stopped us and took us to the doctor, who dressed my wounds, and then I was carried home. In a few days’ time, when I got worse, they took me to the hospital in Włodawa. I was there for a whole month, and then they took me home. I went several times to see the doctor in Wisznice to have my dressing changed.
