My wartime experiences

We were in German slavery for five years, and on 23 June 1944 the freedom fighters from the East came to our rescue. At 4 p.m. a battle commenced, and it ended at 6 in the evening. We were sitting in the trench at the time. We heard the projectiles flying in the air above us – [projectiles] fired by the cannons set up in our orchard. I was afraid, because I saw a burning house and heard grenades exploding. I thought the Germans wanted to burn the entire village down, but I had it all mixed up – the Germans had left a landmine, and then one of their cars drove over it. The house caught on fire during the explosion. The next day, we saw two Soviet soldiers – they were followed by [other] Soviets, and then by even more Soviets.
