My wartime experience

In 1944, a war broke out between Germany and the Soviet Union. When it was about to start, people were very scared – they feared that with the approaching front, the armies would steal their food and horses. When the front was getting closer, some people escaped to the woods so that the Germans would not take their horses.

On Saturday night I heard gunfire. On Sunday morning we all hid in the trenches. [Every time] I left the trench, I heard cannon shots getting louder and louder. After lunch it started to rain, and we were stuck in the trenches. I saw German cars burning at night. In the morning, some people ran to these cars. Before lunch I heard the Soviets marching down the road. I was very happy and ran to my neighbors to tell them that the Soviets were nearby.
