My most important wartime experience
1944 was like this: once the Germans moved from Wisznice, the Russians came and started fighting the Germans. While retreating, the Germans burned a lot of homes, as well as the bell tower near the new church. People went into the fields, while men with horses fled into the woods. When the Germans ran away through Curyn, they went into the forest and stole many horses. The people [from whom the Germans] took horses brought lard and vodka to beg [the Germans] to give their horses back. But the only ones they gave back were ones that couldn’t walk any more. And when the Russians came, they took the horses that the Germans had returned to the people.
