My most important wartime experience
It was [in] 1944. One day, when the Germans were retreating from Poland, some Germans came and placed two cannons next to our house. Other people escaped to the woods then, but I stayed home with my mum. Soon the fighting started. The Germans were firing at the Soviets. The battle lasted from 5.00 p.m. to 1.00 a.m. In the evening, when the Germans left, we went down to the basement, but we were still terrified because the missiles fell very close to the house. Around midnight, Sokołowski’s house burned down in Dubica. In the morning, people started returning to their homes. On the next day, there were no more Germans, only the Soviets.
