My most important wartime experience

On Sunday morning, the Germans came to our village. I was afraid that they would steal our cows and horses, so I took [them] into the woods. There were already a lot of people there. After lunch, the battle in Wisznice started, and many people went to the forest. There was a lot of commotion, as projectiles exploded over our heads. After tying up the cows and horses, I joined my friends and we went to the older people. Everybody was trembling with fear. In the evening it started to rain, so we went to the barn, which was near the forest. By morning, the Soviets had already arrived.
