Wartime experiences

On 1 September 1939 Germany invaded Poland. The entire Polish army was marching to the front. Some soldiers were happy to fight for their homeland, while others were sad that they would die and never return. On the night of 1 September we packed our things to leave Bydgoszcz. We left in a cart as soon as we were ready. There were many of us, and we were on the road for a long time, because it was quite far. We were moving very slowly, because the German planes were dropping bombs all the time and we had to hide in the woods. People were escaping wherever they could. We were constantly on the run. Forests, houses, barns and whole villages, everything was burning, and planes were flying like swarms of bees. We were on the road for almost two weeks; we were driving at night, because it was impossible during the day. When we reached our destination, the planes were still dropping bombs. The planes disappeared only when the Germans came. [The Germans] tormented the Polish people for five years. But even that came to an end. Now Poles will take revenge on the Germans.
