Wartime experiences
There was a war with Germany in 1944. The Soviet and Polish armies were fighting the Germans, who wanted to defend themselves at the Bug River. People from the area were ordered to go in the direction of Chełm. This was my first experience of war. I had to leave my family home at such a young age. I was very sad thinking that I would never return there or that my home would be burned down. Fortunately, God did not allow this. We were staying not that far, seven kilometers away, at my aunt’s house. We lived there for a few days. After my aunt’s village was liberated by the Soviets, we returned to our house. It was not destroyed, but damaged by the shrapnel.
