My most memorable moment from the occupation
It was in 1944. The Germans arrived in their cars, surrounded the village and carried out a roundup. I saw one of the mill workers hiding in a pit in the bushes. His co-worker, a German, discovered him and wanted to get him. As he approached the pit, the Pole saw him and fled along the dirt road. The German started to chase him, but when he saw that he would not catch up with him, he started shooting. The fleeing man ran into the bushes again and stumbled upon a river. Having swum across, he changed direction and ran away. The German returned home very angry that he failed to catch the clever Pole.
