My most memorable moment from the occupation
It was in 1942. I was 5 years old. It was the most memorable and the saddest day for me. In the morning, a car arrived in front of our house. We looked to see who it was – the gendarmes. They entered the house. First, they took dad to the car and then they conducted a search. They took whatever they wanted. They searched so intently that they threw my toys from the top of the wardrobe to the ground and broke them. My older sister and I were crying for dad, but those executioners did not care. They took dad away and left everything scattered around the house. Mom was not home at the time, and when she came back, dad was already gone. Luckily, he returned pretty soon. He died a year later. The sight of a car with gendarmes has been my biggest scare ever since.
