My most memorable moment from the occupation
In 1939, the war with the Germans began. They were stronger, and so they invaded and occupied our country. At the beginning of the German occupation, I did not know much about what was happening around me, but there were people who worked secretly for Poland day and night. As time went by, the Germans started finding out about such organizations, and as a result they murdered more and more of our brothers and fathers, and oftentimes even our mothers and sisters.
On 18 March 1942 at night, the Germans arrested a few men from our village. In the afternoon, they executed several dozen people in the neighboring village of Karolin and buried them in one grave. Among them was my teacher, the headmaster. Watching my older sisters cry along with his daughters, I understood what the occupation really meant.
Many similar incidents took place later on, as I often heard my parents discuss them with my older sisters.
