My most memorable moment from the occupation

My most memorable experience from the German occupation was the uprising that broke out in Warsaw. I was wounded. We were hiding in the basements. I remember terrible air raids and shooting, and fires all around; it was impossible to go out into the street. We had nothing to eat; there was no water for a few days. Mom had some sugar pieces and that’s how we lived. One day the Germans surrounded the entire house, burst into the basement and took us all to a camp. After a few days they separated us from dad. Dad was taken away by the Germans and mom [fragment missing].

When we came home from the camp, we saw that our apartment was destroyed and we lost everything. We lived in a basement for a very long time. I will never forget that joyful moment when the troops came into our basement – and they were Poles. We started to cry with joy and kiss the soldiers. Our torment was over at last!
